Abstract Assessment of water surface profile in compound channels is essential for flood defence systems. Agriculture and development activities floodplains affect the floodplain shape over length, leading a converging channel. Few laboratory investigations proved overbank flow floodplains. Therefore, innovative precise approaches are still great demand. In this paper, new approach has been proposed to forecast various with using gene expression programming (GEP). The models constructed utilising pertinent experimental data from past studies. A equation devised compute such non-dimensional geometric parameters as angle, width ratio, relative distance, depth, aspect ratio bed slope. findings demonstrate that GEP-derived good correlation other studies (R2 = 0.99 RMSE 0.028 training R2 0.027 testing data). According results statistically based investigations, GEP model created study channel reliable can be used domain.
